How to test the quality of a scented candle?

The quality of a scented candle is not only measured by its components, but also by its behavior.
Here are the criteria to evaluate to assess the quality of a scented candle:

  • Combustion: this concerns the duration and cleanliness of the candle’s combustion. A quality candle should burn evenly and evenly, without forming craters, tunnels or mushrooms. It must also burn without smoking or oozing. The flame should be large enough so that some of the wax becomes liquid and the scent diffuses, but should not be too high. If the tip of the flame is black, it means the flame is too big, and probably the candle is burning too much.
  • Diffusion: this is the ability of the candle to diffuse its scent into the air. A quality candle must diffuse its fragrance evenly and constantly, whether hot or cold.
  • Appearance: this is the visual and tactile appearance of the candle. A quality candle should have a smooth and flawless surface, a bright color without variation, and a pleasant texture to the touch. It must also have an elegant and durable container, which will not crack or discolor.

And we suggest you follow this protocol for quality testing:

  • Make sure the size of the room is suitable for the size of the scented candle. A small candle (75g) will be suitable for a bedroom, but will be less efficient for a larger living/dining room. Conversely, a 3-wick candle will not be suitable for a 10m2 room.
  • Light your candle for approximately 2 hours.
  • Observe the combustion especially the flame and the surface of the candle during combustion and after 2 hours.
  • If you wish to test your candle over several uses, wait a few hours for the candle to cool and then test the lit candle again for 2 hours.

If you are designing a scented candle, repeat this test with different settings until you obtain a perfect result.
