How to choose your scented candle wax?

Scented candles are decorative and olfactory objects that create a warm and pleasant atmosphere. But do you know what these candles are made of? What are the differences between mineral waxes and vegetable waxes? What are the criteria to take into account when choosing your scented candle? In this article, we detail the essential information you need to know.

Mineral waxes: a tradition that dates back to the 1850s

Mineral waxes come from petrochemicals and are obtained from non-renewable residues from petroleum refining.
Paraffin is a mineral wax commonly used to make scented candles. It was discovered in the 1850s, when chemists figured out how to extract this waxy substance found in petroleum. Odorless and of perfectly white, paraffin has proven to be particularly suitable for the production of candles. Paraffin then offers uniform combustion and is much less expensive to produce than other materials used in the 19th century such as beeswax or tallow.
Even today, paraffin is often used to make scented candles because of its many advantages:

  • It burns cleanly and evenly.
  • It is colorless and odorless, which allows dyes and perfumes to be added for maximum customization.
  • It allows good diffusion of the scent when the candle is lit.
  • It is suitable for container-poured or molded candles, as it solidifies quickly and evenly.

Paraffin is also used in many industrial and commercial sectors, including the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries in products such as ointments, moisturizers, lip balms or body lotions. It helps seal in moisture in the skin and protect the skin barrier.
Mineral waxes, in particular paraffin, are therefore ideal for traditional scented candles and offer excellent olfactory results, particularly when the candle is lit.

Vegetable waxes: a natural alternative

Vegetable waxes are natural products that come from plants such as soy, palm, rapeseed, coconut or rice. They are increasingly used for the manufacture of natural scented candles. They also have several advantages:

  • They are biodegradable, which makes them more environmentally friendly than mineral waxes.
  • They burn a little gentler than mineral waxes, which allows you to enjoy your candle for a little longer.
  • They are less white than paraffin, slightly beige.
  • They allow good diffusion of the scent especially when the candle is not burning.

Vegetable waxes are therefore ideal for natural and eco-responsible scented candles, they offer excellent olfactory results, particularly when cold.
It is possible to mix several types of waxes to create a formula, also called a candle base. When the wax is correctly poured into a compatible, good quality container, mineral and vegetable waxes have similar performances in terms of diffusion. One being slightly more suitable for hot diffusion and the other for cold diffusion.
Other components may be added to waxes and fragrance concentrate to improve the appearance, texture, stability or olfactory performance of the scented candle, for example vegetable oils, stearin or esters.

Scented candles: instructions for use

Scented candles are very popular decorative and well-being objects both in Europe and the United States and elsewhere in the world. They create a warm and pleasant atmosphere, while diffusing varied scents. But to take full advantage of their benefits, you must know how to use them correctly. Indeed, scented candles require certain precautions guarantee their safety and durability. Here are some tips for making your scented candle an ally in your interior.

What to do when using it for the first time?

The first time you light your scented candle, you should let it burn long enough for the entire surface of the wax, or almost all of the surface, to liquefy. This can take between one and two hours, depending on the size of the candle. This step prevents the wax from hollowing out and forming pits or craters, which would reduce the diffusion of the scent and the quality of the combustion.

What is the ideal burning time?

Scented candles are designed to be used several times, not all at once. It is recommended to let them burn for between 1 hour and 3 hours. Leaving them burning for more than three hours straight is risky because candles are usually not designed for such use, so the combustion may be too strong. On the contrary, if the burning time is too short, the scented candle may not burn evenly and wax could accumulate on the edges of the container, thus forming a tunnel or crater. it is advisable to extinguish your scented candle when there is only 5mm of wax left to prevent the container from overheating

Why cut and recenter the wick?

The wick of your scented candle plays an essential role in the quality of the burn and scent. It is therefore necessary to take care of it and cut it regularly using a pair of scissors between 0.5 and 0.7 centimeters. This helps prevent the wick from being too long and falling into the wax. You must also take care to recenter the wick after each use, to prevent the flame from touching the container and causing it to overheat. A wick that is too long could also disrupt the combustion of the wax and release black fumes which can be harmful and dirty.

Why use a snuffer or lid rather than blowing?

To extinguish your scented candle, it is best to use a snuffer or a lid, rather than blowing on it. In fact, by depriving the flame of oxygen, you avoid black smoke and splashes of liquid wax, which can be harmful and messy. Lids and snuffers can be decorative elements in their own right, giving your candle more presence. This is particularly true in the case of luxury or very high-end candles.

Why do you have to wait for the candle to cool before moving it?

A scented candle, even a quality one, remains a flammable and fragile object. You must therefore handle it with care and never move it when it is lit or still hot. You could burn yourself or spill wax. You should also avoid placing your candle in an air flow, which in addition to being dangerous, could cause the flame to flicker and alter combustion. Like any heat source object, scented candles must be used with caution. Also remember to keep flammable objects away from the candle before lighting it and position it on a flat, stable surface.

Why store your candles in a cool place?

To keep your scented candle in the best conditions, store it in a place protected from light and temperature variations. Ideally, the temperature should not exceed 24°C. Indeed, with changes in temperature, the wax can crack or shrink. Likewise, you must protect your candle from impacts and scratches, which could damage the container or the wax.
By following these few simple rules, you will be able to fully enjoy your scented candle, which will offer you optimal olfactory diffusion until its wax runs out.

What is an olfactory pyramid?

Perfume is an art that appeals to our senses, our emotions and our imagination. But behind the magic of a fragrance, there is also a science, that of olfactory composition. To create a perfume, perfumers use an essential tool: the olfactory pyramid. What is this ? How is it built? What is his role ? We explain everything to you in this article.

What is an olfactory pyramid?

An olfactory pyramid is a schematic representation of the composition of a perfume, which is divided into three levels: top notes, heart notes and base notes.
Each level corresponds to a group of raw materials which have common olfactory characteristics, and which are revealed at different times during the evaporation of the perfume.

What is the objective of an olfactory pyramid?

The olfactory pyramid has several roles in the perception of a perfume. It permits :

  • To describe and classify perfumes according to their olfactory families. There are several possible classifications, but the most common distinguishes the flowery, oriental, woody, citrus, chypre-fern and aromatic families. There are also nuances linking families together. For example, we are talking about oriental woody.
  • To understand and predict the evolution of a perfume on the skin and in the air. Indeed, a perfume is not static, it changes over time and depending on external conditions. The olfactory pyramid allows you to know which notes will dominate at each stage of the diffusion of the perfume.
  • To choose and appreciate a perfume according to your tastes and desires. Indeed, each person has their own olfactory preferences, which depend on their history, personality, culture and mood. The olfactory pyramid allows you to guide yourself towards the perfumes that best correspond to your profile and your state of mind.

The olfactory pyramid is therefore a useful tool for perfumers, but also for perfume lovers. It reveals the complexity and richness of a fragrance, and invites you to discover it in all its aspects. It is also a means of expression and communication, which allows you to share your emotions and olfactory sensations.

How to properly use an olfactory pyramid?

An olfactory pyramid is a useful tool for choosing a perfume that suits your tastes and needs. This tool must, however, be used with discernment to reveal all its subtlety. The olfactory pyramid is above all present to define a feeling, but the feeling can be variable.
Olfactory perception can differ from one person to another, like color perception. The olfactory pyramid must therefore be seen as a useful and reliable guide but not as an absolute and universal truth.
Depending on the scented product,  the scent may manifest itself in a slightly different way. For example, on a reed diffuser, the base notes are more discreet. Capillary action involves continuous diffusion, the base notes are therefore less perceptible and the top notes more present than with a spray or eau de toilette.
The duration of perception of the notes can also vary depending on the concentration of perfume applied.

Solid perfumes: an ecological and practical alternative

Do you like to wear perfume, but are you looking for a solution that is more environmentally friendly and easier to transport? Then solid perfumes are made for you! These scented balms, which have existed since Antiquity, are composed of natural materials and offer a wide range of scents. Discover the benefits and characteristics of these perfumes like no other.

What is solid perfume?

A solid perfume, also called perfume concrete, is a balm that contains essential oils and/or plant extracts, as well as a fat such as cocoa butter, shea butter or beeswax. It comes in the form of a small pot, a stick or a pendant, which you can slip into your bag or pocket. To perfume yourself, simply rub the balm on the skin, in the places where you want to smell good. The ideal is to target pulsation zones. These are the areas where heat circulates the most, such as the neck, the nape of the neck, the wrists or the crooks of the elbows.

What are the advantages of a solid perfume?

Solid perfumes have many advantages over liquid perfumes. They are :

  • Often more ecological: they are made from natural ingredients and do not contain preservatives, colorings or chemicals, apart from those contained in the perfume concentrate. Compact and space-saving, solid perfumes require fewer raw materials and less packaging than traditional eau de toilette, which significantly reduces their carbon footprint and packaging waste.
  • More practical: they are easy to transport, without risk of leaking or breakage. They are suitable for air travel, as they are not subject to liquid restrictions. They are discreet because they do not leave marks on clothes or hair.
  • More respectful of the skin: they do not contain alcohol which can dry out the skin. They are sometimes enriched with cocoa butter, shea butter or beeswax, which have moisturizing, nourishing and protective properties.
Solid perfumes are therefore an ecological and practical alternative to liquid perfumes, which are attracting more and more perfume lovers. They allow you to perfume yourself in a natural, lasting and original way. They are also a way to express your personality and your mood, by choosing the perfume that suits you best.

How to choose your solid perfume?

The choice of a solid perfume depends on several criteria, such as:

  • The composition: it is important to check the list of ingredients, to avoid allergenic or irritating substances if you are concerned. It is preferable to favor solid perfumes ensuring good traceability of raw materials.
  • Scent: there is a wide variety of solid perfumes, which can be classified into different olfactory families, such as floral, oriental, woody, citrus, chypre, fern and aromatic. You have to choose the solid perfume that matches your tastes, your style and your mood. It is possible to test a solid perfume by applying it to the wrist or elbow, and letting it evolve for a few minutes. It should also be taken into account that solid perfume can react differently depending on skin type, pH or body temperature. When it comes to trying a solid perfume, there is little difference from an eau de toilette.
  • The brand: there are many brands that offer solid perfumes, some more well-known than others. You need to find out about the reputation, ethics and values of the brand, to ensure that they are consistent with your positioning. It is also necessary to check customer reviews, which can give indications on the quality, staying power and loyalty of the solid perfume.

How to preserve your solid perfume?

Solid perfume should be stored or stored in a dry, temperate place away from light, to prevent it from melting, oxidizing or losing its intensity. Also remember to close the container correctly, to prevent the solid perfume from drying out or being altered. If you are designing solid perfumes, be especially careful about storage.

Capillarity

How do diffusers work?

Perfume diffusers, also known as capillas, are decorative objects that pleasantly scent your interior. Their principle is simple: they exploit capillarity, a physical phenomenon which allows a liquid to circulate in a porous space such as wood, paper or fabric. The liquid is attracted to the molecules of the material around it and moves along it.
A fragrance diffuser consists of a bottle filled with scented liquid and sticks that soak in the bottle. The stick is made of a porous material, such as wood, rattan or bamboo. It has many interstices between its fibers, which serve as channels for the scented liquid. This rises by capillary action to the end of the stick, where it evaporates and diffuses its odor into the air. The stick can be made from natural or synthetic materials.

The perfume diffuses constantly, which reinforces the intensity of the top notes, the most volatile, compared to the base notes, the most persistent. (To learn more about the composition of a perfume, see our article on the olfactory pyramid).
The diffuser works by capillary action, there is no combustion unlike a candle. Furthermore, the diffuser diffuses the perfume permanently, which makes it complementary to the scented candle.

The average lifespan of a perfume diffuser is one month for a 100ml diffuser and can go up to several months for larger diffusers. This shelf life may vary depending on the size of the bottle, the number of sticks or climatic conditions. The more sticks you use, the faster the liquid will evaporate and the smell will be intense. To extend the life of your diffuser, there are refills for diffusers. It is also an ecological and economical gesture. The diffuser is the ideal complement to the scented candles.

Wait until the wax has completely cooled and solid before starting cleaning.
Place the container in the freezer for a few hours to make it easier to remove the wax.
Turn the container upside dow to remove the remaining wax, make sure to also remove the wick and its metal base.
Once all the wax and label have been removed, wash the container in hot, soapy water to remove any residue.
Finally dry it carefully with a clean cloth.

If your container has a label, you can remove it by soaking it in warm, soapy water for a few minutes, then gently scraping it off with a non-abrasive object

The basics of body perfume

The world of perfume is full of terms that are often misunderstood by the public. The names may seem confusing to the uninitiated. These names are divided between terms defining the percentage of perfume for a finished product and terms defining the material constituting the solution.

Eau de toilette, eau de Cologne, eau de parfum…. What a difference ?

Scented body products have different names depending on their fragrance content. An eau de parfum is similar to an eau de toilette but in a more concentrated version. This difference in concentration is the cause of the price difference observed between these 2 products.

The exact concentration per product is as follows:

  • Pillow mist 1 to 3%
  • Eau de Cologne 3 to 5%
  • Toilet water 5 to 15%
  • Eau de parfum 15 to 20%
  • Perfume 20 to 40%
A higher concentration allows the product to last longer but involves additional cost.

Alcoholic base, aqueous base, what’s the difference?

To dilute the ingredients making up a perfume, a liquid is used, it is called a solvent.
This solvent can be water or alcohol.
These solvents meet different needs
Alcoholic solutions are used to give lightness to the perfume. They evaporate more quickly than aqueous bases.
Aqueous solutions are used to prevent the perfume from evaporating too quickly. They allow you to give intensity to a creation. These solutions give greater density to a perfume. The choice of an aqueous solution can also be motivated by the refusal to use alcohol. Whether from a CSR perspective, or for community reasons.
The choice of solvent therefore depends on both a technical need and a commercial need.
There is another type of product that can be created with or without alcohol to perfume the body.
This is solid perfume. For more details on solid perfume, see our dedicated article.

How to recognize a quality scented candle?

Scented candles are products that create a pleasant and relaxing atmosphere in your home. They are made up of 4 main elements: the wax, the wick, the container and the perfume. Each of these elements has an influence on the quality of the scented candle. We will help you recognize a quality scented candle.

THE WAX

Wax is the main element of a scented candle. It gives shape, color and texture to the candle. It is also what determines the duration and quality of combustion. There are two main types of waxes: mineral waxes and vegetable waxes.
Mineral waxes come from petrochemicals, they are obtained from solid residues from petroleum refining. The best known is paraffin. Mineral waxes have the advantage of being stable, solid and heat resistant. They are also colorless and odorless, which allows them to add colorings and perfumes without altering their quality. They are suitable for container-poured or molded candles because they solidify quickly and evenly. They allow excellent diffusion of the scent when hot, that is to say when the candle is lit. Mineral waxes are undoubtedly the perfect ally for perfumes because they are compatible with a very wide range of perfumes.
